The MacGregor is, like her smaller sister Wee Rob well suited to car topping on even very small cars. Whilst larger she also has the same head turning elegant looks of Wee Rob but has the additional capacity to carry her very stylish ketch rig for easy handling spirited longer distance sailing. The first time I saw a MacGregor, it was built from sapele ply and on the roof-rack of a car heading in the opposite direction – I was so blown away by the beauty of the finish that I nearly crashed my camper!
MacGregor is also an excellent introduction to modern glued plywood lapstrake construction, which you may later use to build a Eun Mara or an even larger Grey Seal. While you are dreaming about your larger boat, MacGregor will continue to thrill you with her easy paddling and exciting sailing.
The MacGregor comes in three versions. The standard version off the plans is 14’1″, and has been stretched to 15’8″ by increasing the mould spacing to 20½”. We have also scaled up the whole boat by the same proportion (referred to as the Enhance MacGregor), giving a 34″ beam instead of 31″, and increasing the depth of the hull. The fully scaled up version is built using 5mm planking.
We can supply the kit as an open boat, or with sufficient plywood to deck the boat – highly recommended if you are intending adding a sail.
